View Full Version : Creating Custom Image for Book Jacket

I looked through the rest of the forums and didn't really see anything that addressed this situation. The text placements on the book jacket templates are very limited, so using Photoshop, I'd like to create a custom image with text embedded in it for the cover of a book jacket. I'd like to know the proper dimensions for jackets for both the deluxe and classic books.

I'm a graphic artist, so I already understand margins, bleeds, ppi, dpi, etc.

Maybe someone from MyPublisher can answer this, but will a customizeable book jacket template ever be possible? I'm mainly interested in being able to scale and move both text and images for placement whereever I'd like them to go.

Hi ...
I am just designing my first book with My Publisher. I have to agree with Rachel. I would like more freedom to move / design type for the jacket cover and have a choice of fonts & colours.
Not just for the front cover itself but the whole jacket cover flaps, back, front and title page.

Could someone from the crew at My Publisher please give a reply?

Thanks,
Tiger

Here is a link to a book that is awesome. The cover and some of the interior pages were processed in Photoshop.

There is also a link for creating pages in Photoshop that appears in this forum, Using Photo Editing Software that gives the dimentions that you are asking about.

Hi ....
Thanks for the wonderful book design review from Singapore , Bali, etc.
It was beautifully done.
Unfortunately....I do not use PHotoshop . I use Corel Draw 8 & Corel Draw X3.

Yet I want to be able to have the freedom to design my pages as I wish....

Any suggestions ?

Hi Tiger,

Remember that there are two parts to editing images; tool-specific steps and conceptual processes.

Steps would be something like: In Photoshop, go to Image > Adjustments > Pretty Picture Filter and click "My my garbage look pretty"

The conceptual processes would be something like: After opening your image, increase the saturation of the image and, as a last step, sharpen the image.

The conceptual stuff refers what you need to do to your images. The tool-specific stuff tells you how to do it (with a particular tool).

If you are using CorelDraw, go to a bookstore and pick up two books. One on how to enhance digital photographs (and these are usually in the Photography section) and the other on how to use CorelDraw. Then, as you see what you want to do to your image, open the CD book and read about how to do it.

Additionally, search Google for "CorelDraw Forums" and read those.

Photoshop is a tool. Granted, it's the main tool used by the pros, but it is still just a tool. So is CorelDraw and it's simply a matter of learning to use it.

As I tell the people that take my classes, "If you put a scalpel in my hands, I am not a surgeon. I am just a lunatic with a really sharp knife." :-)

Amazing! Would you mind tell me how could you create one photo over two pages?

Thanks.

I've never made pictures to cover two pages. The book link was by another poster. I just wanted you to see what he did.
