I am wondering about any additional custom and/or duty charges for books shipped to us Canadians. Would appreciate any feedback from fellow Canadians.
Thanks.

Hello Canadian Customer,
The Canadian customs service does charge import taxes. However it is very difficult to predict how much will be charged, or if any particular package will actually be inspected and taxes levied against it. We are constantly trying to inform our Canadian customers in advance about these charges but tthe consistency with which the Canadian customs service levies its taxes is unpredictable at best. We have had customers who have purchased 2 or 3 PhotoBooks from us and not have any taxes, but then a subsequent order is taxed by the Canadian customs service, and naturally the customer is confused. It is for this reason that we do not provide any specific information about customs, duty in value added taxes when Canadian customers import our PhotoBook products; it seems that the entire process is hit or miss.

It is best to be prepared and assume that your government will levy import taxes on every product purchased from another country, based on the face value of the product and not on the actual amount paid(coupons?).

Thanks,

MyPublisher Customer Service

I'm not sure you folks understand English. It's NOT the customs OR the taxes levied by the Feds. We Canadians expect this and it's predictable. Some do get lucky and their parcel slips through customs with no charges at all and others get hit. It's the amount of dollars that triggers most Customs inspections. That's not the MAJOR problem with ordering from My Publisher. It's the robbery committed by UPS with their "extra" charges above and beyond what "you" say is shipping costs. Every Canadian customer get s a UPS surprise at the door and you guys are history. No more repeat customers. You refuse to ship by any other means than UPS . .. Oops is a better term. It's either damaged or lost most times anyway. Tracking for such a minimal costs for a book is useless in Canada most of the time anyway through UPS . . it doesn't work well. Why force us to use it. It's for your convenience I think. I'd be happy to take the risk through USPS. If it gets lost there's ways to recover as well as through UPS. The extra charges picked from your pocket by UPS is about half the cost of a book most times anyway. Why not give the Canucks a break . . . offer USPS and dump UPS to Canada.

I live near Toronto and I've ordered from mypublisher three times. The first time was a single small book and there was no additional charges, the second time was several large books and the duty was about $30. The last time I ordered about 100 large 80 page books (for work) and the duty was about $400. I asked the customs broker how the fees were calculated and they told me it was based on weight.

You are correct about UPS, the boxes were shredded by the time we got them, however we knew it would happen and we called mypublisher before we placed the order and asked them to give them extra packaging, which they did, and no books were damaged.

Just called FedEx for the status of my shipment and they asked for $20 to clear customs..... this book is starting to get a little more expensive than I was willing to pay. Worse part is I was only actually being charged $7 taxes... but because customs paid for it to clear they charged me an additional $10 for the service. Why didn't they just call me to collect the $7 instead of waiting for me to call them to collect $18.20 somthing in order for them to deliver it?
