I have hundreds of family photos to scan. Does anyone know of a scanner that will scan a lot of pictures one after another, much like a copier? I need each photo to be an individual file, so that when added to bookmaker I can add captions.

I use the Canon Canoscan 8800, which I just got from Amazon.com and it was just under $200. I am also scanning hundreds of old family photos for a mypublisher book and I think this works great. You place as many photos as you can on the glass (which is 8.5" x 11") and then click "Mulitscan" and you select each picture individually or it will automatically do it for you. After it scans each one you name each file and then go to the next batch of photos. It also has a "Remove Dust & Scratches" setting which is great for old photos (mainly black and white photos). I am very happy with it and with the "Multiscan" it saves me a lot of time. With the Epson scanner I had before this, I had to scan all of the photos together and then take them into Photoshop and crop each photo out to make each photo a file. It was very time consuming. The quality and speed of the Canonscan is great. You should check out the reviews for it. There are 142 reviews (I think) on Amazon.com and most of them are good.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your suggestion. This is a good alternative, but I am still hoping for a scanner that I can load with a bunch of photos and it will automatically feed them into the machine. This would save a huge amount of time. I do appreciate your input and I may get one of these if I cannot find what I am looking for. I am not sure that it even exists, but someone should get busy on this because I bet it would be a hit with everyone trying to digitize their old photos.

My, goodness! You have such a vast knowledge of all this. I am an old woman and probably do not have enough years left to individually scan each into PhotoShop and tweak. (Tee-Hee) I am doing this for my posterity, however, and I know that these digital file extensions will change during the years and I want these pictures to be bound in books that WILL NEVER change. I am beginning to think that what I am hoping to do is a pipe dream and I may just have to select critical photos to scan individually to include in my books. I have visions of 25-30 volumes of books to leave for my child and grandchildren to peruse. I certainly am confused about all this size business and do have lots of really small school pictures, etc. to scan, so thanks for cluing me in on the dpi to scan. I have used PhotoShop, but it is very complicated and so I guess I need to get serious about using and editing with it. Is there a friendlier software for the novice photo editor? Thank you so much for your expertise advice on this situation. I am getting a clearer picture of what I have to do.

Their statements regarding the scan quality...

"Your pictures are professionally scanned at 300dpi JPEG files"

and they have a couple of sample scans posted on their site...

http://www.scanmyphotos.com/samplescans.html

you can click on the scans to see larger images as well.

I haven't tried them, just read about them in a Photo Industry Reporter paper this morning and checked out their site. The article got me thinking about the boxes of photos I "intended to scrapbook" and how I could have them scanned and upload them to MP to create digital photobooks. Oh how I need another project...

I am looking for a way to scan thousands of photos quickly and safely. I saw the posts for the Canonscan and for the service where you send the pics to them and they scan. I wonder is anyone has heard anything recently about maybe where you can go and feed your pics in and they would scan quickly, without having to do them one at a time, or without sending them off (this scares me), or without having to purchase a scanner. I am brand new to this as of today, Nov. 13, 2008. I obviously need lots of help.:confused:
