View Full Version : High CPU Usage

Using BookMaker 2.3 when I'm not doing anything, Task Manager says BookMaker.exe's CPU usage is hovering around 50%-60% on both cores. Any idea why? It's kind of annoying and making it hot in here when it shouldn't be.
Thanks.

How many books do you have saved in your software? I am working on two books at the same time and my CPU usage is in the neighborhood of 4% to 5%. Do you have any other applications running at the same time? When I had several 100 page books saved at the same time, my computer struggled. I don't keep them once my book has been received and all looks ok. I Export them to get them out of the software. Also, how full is your hard drive? You might need to defragment...

Just a thought...it might not be your case, however.

Thanks for the thoughts - only 11 pages so far. I've only stumbled upon this situation recently as I never noticed any problems before. Once I close out of the program, everything becomes normal again. I'm using Vista, if that matters.

I'm using Vista too. In your startup menu check the item "Startup". If there are any items listed, right click and "delete" the shortcut and restart your computer. The only thing I have in my Startup is my monitor calibration software that loads my video card settings. You might find all kinds of software listed there. You don't want them to load when you start your computer. Every time I load new software, I go there and delete the shortcut. Deleting the shortcut from your Start menu does not remove the program. The only way to remove your program is to go to the Control Panel. All this does is remove the shortcut that installs all the software when you boot your computer up. Check and see what you have there. Like I said, nothing should be there that you don't want loaded when you start your computer.

Try this and see if it helps.

I'll chime in to say my computer does the same thing. And it only happens when I open BookMaker. And nothing else running.

I can run MS Office, games, video apps, whatever, and no 100% CPU, just when BookMaker is open.

And my PC isn't bad either, not great, but not bad at all. XP SP2, AMD 3800+ with 1Gb RAM, plenty of HD space available, and I'm a defrag fool, do it all the time.

The weird thing is though, it doesn't "act" like it's 100% CPU usage, I mean, it's not crawling how it normally does if I have 100% CPU usage, but the task manager is showing it is topped off.

So LauraF, it's not just you.

Thanks dibbkd, it's good to know I'm not alone. As you mentioned, it's not really a problem, I'm just not sure what it's doing and if it isn't a sign something is wrong. I'll keep an eye on it and report back if I figure anything out.
Thanks!

No, you are not alone, I have the same problem as well. Use windows XP, 2 GB RAM. I have Photoshop CS3 running all the time, when I open MyPublisher along with Photoshop, I always, I mean "ALWAYS" get a warning messege "You are running low on memory, please close other program..........."

If it's just when you open BookMaker its because BookMaker is working to cache the images so the application works quickly in the future. It should stop after 10 minutes, at least.

Thank you for the explanation - I just let it sit there unattended for a while and the CPU usage did go down to normal levels.
