View Full Version : Best photo dimensions to fit in default boxes?

Another photo size question... I hope MyP answers my first one soon so I can get working in time to use my coupon :)
Is there a guide that will tell us the best size to rework our photos to so they fit into the default page-layout boxes with the least amount of resizing? I want to create my own image design for the cover image cut out on a Classic book, but I don't know what size the photo should be. I'm afraid if there is a lot of resizing, graphical elements I create in PS will not display well during printing.
Thank you,
Pamela

Pamela - BookMaker is not designed specifically to use with PhotoShop. The images come out best if you let BookMaker do the work and you just drag and drop. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you but it's meant for novice photo users and its drag and drop!

I do not resize images in Photoshop, just simply do what MP says, drag and drop. Let MP software do appropriate resizing. This works well with my 6-10 mega pix camera output. The only time I resize is when I use Photoshop for a full page layout (as you've seen in a wedding album example). In the past I used 180dpi as a guideline (MP specifies this), but will go to 300 dpi in the future just to see the difference.

Just measured the photo in my Classic cutout. It is approx. 3 3/4" x 2 1/2".

Pamela, I, too, hope they will answer soon. I am holding back on my work, because I need some answers. I do not want to redo everything.
For those taking photos and dumping them in, swell, but for those scanning old photos, and cleaning them up in Photoshop, we need to know the numbers.
fotojoural, Please let us know about the difference between 180 dpi and 300. I also am very curious to know.
What I want to know is:
What dpi does MyPublisher print at?
Between 180dpi and 300dpi, what is the absolute best to use?
Should I use higher for a full page photo and lower for a quarter page photo, or vise versa, or does it make no difference?
Sometimes I use a high resolution for a small origional photo to scan and a lower resolution for a large photo. I can resize the photo to whatever is best. I just want to know what best is. Or should I look more at the total size. Over 800kb I think they said, on the small end. This would be okay for the six per page? The four photos per page?
Is a two megabytes file optimal for a full page photo or a half page or a quarter page photo? I can look at pixels, inches, or file size, or all three. I just want a little guidence here.
They say that for a full page bleed, in the classic book, we should use 1600 x 1200 pixels. At 300dpi, this equals 4 inches in height in PhotoShop, yet the book is 8 3/4 inches in height. Not sure why this is, but I could gage by that porportion.
Help, Please!
And should I add lots of sharpening?
Thanks

You'll want to use 300DPI for best results. I am creating images at 2040 X 1530 for each page. Do some experimenting: create an example page and load it into My Publisher software, then use the + and - buttons to see how it fits best.
I haven't ordered my book yet. I'm still working on it, and just don't have a lot of time. Load yours when you're done so we can all see.
Good luck

Hello,
I have the same frustration, and I have done lots of experimenting, but want my images to fit the pages exactly so that the image is crisp and unmanipulated. I scanned in old photos, and made really cool collages that look like crap in the book preview page. :( I think I'm going to go with another company :(

Hi all, I'm new here and I am having the same issue, unfortunately. I was looking at the full pages and they looked great, but when I use the zoom tool, some of the pics look grainy or heavily compressed. Is this the way they will appear in the book?
From what I've read in some of the posts here, am I to believe that the resizing box knows what is best, and the picture will be clear as long as the box turns blue? (As opposed to the red box?)
Thanks for your help!
