I just wanted to post this book I made of a group vacation to South Africa and recieve some feedback. I wanted to go with my own layout because I had some ideas that could not be accomplished with the templates. This book is all about the wildlife, but the next one I am working on is about the entire trip, including people.

Thank you. I will have to get back to you about the lense for the specs. Where are you heading in Africa?

Hi nvarlamoff,
Great book! Not only is your photography stuning but the layout of each page and the organization of the book is absolutely professional.
You have a bunch of interesting effects in there, Like the image spread across two pages. How do you do that? I could probably work it out in photoshop, but if there's an easier way...

Thank you. I am an industrial designer and have a good knowledge of graphic design. The two page spreads are quite easy. First I set up the whole two page spread in Illustrator (you could also use Photoshop or Indesign) and then I save each page as a jpeg and place them in the book software. Very easy. The only tricky part is figuring how to crop the image so that when the book is together, it looks seemless. You have to leave the image slightly wider so when it is cropped after printing, the two images line up. I never use templates when designing page layout for anything so I am glad that I have the flexibility to do so with the full image layout option.

I just looked at you South Africa book and think it is fantastic. Tremendously good job! I'm in the process of pulling a similar book together on St. Croix. You clearly did not use templates, did you simply create each page in Photoshop with text with each page being the book page size --- e.g. 15x11.5 and ship each of the completed pages. How is the registration when one photo is printed on two pages? This is my first MyPublisher book --- any thing that I should be looking out for?

Many thanks.

I created each page in Illustrator complete with text, but you can use Photoshop too. Yes, I made each image the size of the page and used the "full page" layout in the book software. The two page layout just has part of the picture on each page that I created in Illustrator. I made a little overlap so not too much of the image would be lost in the binding.

This was my first book so I don't have too much advice, since I really didn't use most of the features in the book making software. Just watch images and text too close to edges and the binding and make sure the text has a high enough contrast with the background color. Mine was too dark in the printed version.

You did an awesome job. Did you use a digital camera? I recently bought a new camera that has 10 mp. The recommendation for MyPublisher is 5-6 mp or the picutres may come out to pixelated. Any suggestions? I haven't a clue how to change the file size.
I am using PhotoShop to create my pages. Many without preset layouts. But I did mine in the 8X11 size and sending over to MyPublisher to be used in the larger book 15X11.5. Should I consider doing the pages over again to the 15X11.5 size first before I send it over to MP? I wasn't aware that size was available in PhotoShop. I am new to PhotoShop and still have a lot to learn about the software.

Yes, we used a digital camera- 14 mega pixel. I think you will be alright with the layout you have now since the ratio between the two sizes is about the same. In Photoshop, you can have anysize layout you want, just change the canvas size. The program is huge and there really isn't much that the program can't do. The only issue you might run into is the possible reduction in visible quality with the scaling of the images from a small size to a large size.

Your book is absolutely beautiful! The photos are stunning! What type of camera and lenses did you use? Did you use a tripod or how did you steady your camera?

I made my own layout and placed the entire page image in one of the open templates.

The camera is a Nikon D40 and I used a 50mm and 200mm lense and never used a tripod.
