Without spending too much ($200-ish), are there any scanners that folks would recommend for 35mm negatives?

Are the dedicated film/slide scanners better or worse than flatbed scanners for negatives, regarding the end-quality?

I've got several folls of film that I'd like converted to digital so I can manipulate them on the computer.

Thanks.

My answer would be 'no, I can't recommend a film scanner for around $200 that will give you quality results.'

Look to spend anywhere from $500-600 and, yes, film scanners are built specifically to scan in all the information from negatives and transparencies. Traditional flatbed scanners often have a problem in not getting all the color right.

If you have switched to a digital camera and these rolls of film are the last in your collection, I would spend the $200 to have them scanned by an imaging company that will be using high end scanning equipment. You'll be much happier with the results.
